CROWLEY GALLERY: Still Life Exhibit, 6:00-7:00pm opening reception

NAHS members and all others! The Crowley Gallery is opening for the first time this year with a collection of still life pieces from beginning, intermediate, advanced, and AP art. In co-ordinance with still life romanticisity, intellectualism, and atmosphere there will be an opening reception with the finest wines (Martinelli’s) and aged cheeses. But really the show is going to be great, so come and support the talented and budding artists of the acclaimed San Marino High School.

The Friends of the Michael White Adobe are pleased to announce that an open house will be held at the adobe on Oct. 29 from 7-10 p.m.

Date: October 29, 2010

Time: 7:00 PM - 10:00 PM

Location: Michael White Adobe: northeast of the swimming pool

Address: 2701 Huntington Drive, San Marino, 91108

Website: https://sites.google.com/site/michaelwhiteadobe/home

Description: This is the first time that the Michael White Adobe has been open to the public since the late 1990s - DONT MISS IT. The Michael White Adobe was built c. 1843 (possibly earlier) and belonged to Michael White, also known as Miguel Blanco.

Born an Englishman, he apprenticed to a whaler at the age of 14 and never went home again. He became an early pioneer of California, married a daughter of the formidable Dona Eulalia Perez, majordoma of Mission San Gabriel, and lived a life of adventure - as various as being King Kamehameha IIIs tax collector, a smuggler, a prospector in the California Gold Rush, and a trader on the Rowland-Workman Immigrant Party of 1841.

This event is scheduled to coincide with the San Marino High School homecoming game against South Pasadena High. All are welcome to enjoy the adobe, see slideshows and presentations related to the history of San Marino’s oldest residence, and even to meet “the ghost of Michael White.”

The open house will commence before the game at 7:00 p.m. on Friday Oct. 29, and remain open until about 10. Please forward this to anyone who might be interested. Parking might be an issue, so carpool if possible. See you there!

Why don’t we get the best out of people? Sir Ken Robinson argues that it’s because we’ve been educated to become good workers, rather than creative thinkers. Students with restless minds and bodies — far from being cultivated for their energy and curiosity — are ignored or even stigmatized, with terrible consequences. “We are educating people out of their creativity,” Robinson says. It’s a message with deep resonance. Robinson’s TEDTalk has been distributed widely around the Web since its release in June 2006. The most popular words framing blog posts on his talk? “Everyone should watch this.”

A visionary cultural leader, Sir Ken led the British government’s 1998 advisory committee on creative and cultural education, a massive inquiry into the significance of creativity in the educational system and the economy, and was knighted in 2003 for his achievements. His latest book, The Element: How Finding Your Passion Changes Everything, a deep look at human creativity and education, was published in January 2009.

About NAHS

From Official NAHS webpage (link below):

NAHS is designed specifically for high school students in grades 9-12. In 1978, the National Art Education Association (NAEA) began the National Art Honor Society (NAHS) program specifically for high school students, for the purpose of inspiring and recognizing those students who have shown an outstanding ability in art. The NAHS strives to aid members in working toward the attainment of the highest standards in art areas, and to bring art education to the attention of the school and community.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT: Taylor Beldy:

Hey NAHS members, I am excited that you have chosen to join this society! This year is really going to be great and I am hoping to create new and innovative ways that the artistic society of San Marino High School can affect its campus in a positive manner. That being said, we are not a traditional club, we are a society, and in being such, we are able to address our community service requirements in a particularly ‘creative light.’ My job as NAHS president is to assure the satisfaction of all our NAHS members, create a collaborative artistic environment, and provide you with community service hours, events, trips, and art/technique demos. It will be a mutual effort and I will need your help, but look forward to gallery openings, art competitions, deigning t-shirts, and anything else under the sun of artistic expression!
